Whether you’re dreaming of hitting the high notes like Ariana Grande or already an established competent singer, choosing how to continue learning is something to think about. With so many vocal lessons now available both online and in-person, it can be hard to know what’s right for you.
Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons of online vs. in-person singing lessons—so you can make the choice that fits your voice, lifestyle, and goals.
🎧 Online Singing Lessons
✅ Pros:
1. Convenience & Flexibility
You can take a lesson from anywhere—your bedroom, the studio, or hotel. No commute, no dress code (well, mostly). Great for touring or busy artists.
2. Wider Choice of Teachers
Online learning opens up access to voice coaches from all over the world. You’re not limited to who’s in your city.
3. Easier Scheduling
Online lessons often means more flexible on time slots
4. Record & Replay
Many online platforms let you record sessions, so you can review your progress anytime.
5. They Really Work—Even Without Video
When I first started training as a singing teacher, I flew to Los Angeles several times to study with the Mistro Seth Riggs, the vocal coach behind stars like Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. Seth was in his late 70s at the time and had never taught using online video—he taught by phone.
One trip, over the course of four days, I sat in on Natalie Cole’s singing lessons, listening as she called in for her sessions. No video, no visual cues—just the voice. And yet, Seth didn’t need to see anyone to know exactly what was happening. His ears were trained to hear everything the voice was doing. Day 5 Seth went down to meet and work with Natalie at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood in preparation for her show there that night.
I learned more in those few days than I could have imagined—both from him and the master teachers around him.
That experience shaped my own teaching skills and philosophy.
I’ve now taught singing online for nearly 20 years, long before it was common or convenient. I didn’t jump into it lightly. I made sure I had the training and ear skills to teach effectively through sound alone.
People often ask, “But how can you see my breathing online?” Well—first, I can see more than people think. But more importantly, I don’t need to. Years of training have taught me this:
If you listen closely enough, the voice tells you everything you need to know.
🗣 So… Which One Is Right for You?
Choose Online If:
-
You need flexibility
-
You’re self-motivated
-
You’re comfortable with technology
-
You need your teacher to come with you
Choose In-Person If:
-
You are local and its convenient
-
You value the energy of being in the same space
🎶 Final Thoughts
The truth is: both online and in-person lessons can help you grow as a singer, it doesn’t really matter. It really comes down to having a great teacher who understands the voice and how to lead and guide you.
Some students even combine both— online for convenience, and in-person when they can.
